Magnetic Island is a beautiful island 8 km off the coast of Townsville Queensland Australia. Surrounded by fine sand and views of mountains, beach, coco trees, and wildlife.
Magnetic Island is known by many local names such as Maggie Isle, Maggie Island or The Island. The name comes from the ‘magnetic effect to compass’ said to have experienced by Captain Cook as he sailed by the island. Although no scientific research has proven truth to the “magnetic effect”, the name gives a vibe of mystery and triggers curiosity. In history, the island was used as fort for warships during World War II. It also served as a defense for Townsville’s military base.
A 25-minute ride ferry ride will take you to the island and you will be welcomed by sea breeze and clear waters. Among the many things you can do on the island are hiking, water activities such as fishing, snorkeling, swimming, kayak, and diving. Magnetic island also celebrates a festival every September where people party all night until sunrise.
